Episcopal Nuns Convert to Catholicism

BALTIMORE, Md. (Catholic Review) - After seven years of prayer and discernment, a community of Episcopal nuns and their chaplain will be received into the Roman Catholic Church during a Sept. 3 Mass celebrated by Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien.
The archbishop will welcome 10 sisters from the Society of All Saints’ Sisters of the Poor when he administers the sacrament of confirmation and the sisters renew their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience in the chapel of their Catonsville convent.
Episcopal Father Warren Tanghe will also be received into the church and is discerning the possibility of becoming a Catholic priest.
Mother Christina Christie, superior of the religious community, said the sisters are “very excited” about joining the Catholic Church and have been closely studying the church’s teachings for years. Two Episcopal nuns who have decided not to become Catholic will continue to live and minister alongside their soon-to-be Catholic sisters. Members of the community range in age from 59 to 94.

“For us, this is a journey of confirmation,” Mother Christina said. “We felt God was leading us in this direction for a long time.”

Doctors of the Church

The title “Doctor of the Church” is an official honor that is bestowed by the Pope in recognition of the outstanding contribution a person has made to the understanding and interpretation of the sacred Scriptures and the development of Christian doctrine.

As of 2009, there are thirty-three male and female Doctors of the Catholic Church who hail from all ages of the Church’s history. Of these, three are women (Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila, and Therese of Lisieux) and twenty-four are quoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (The eight who are not quoted are Saints Ephraem, Isidore, “the Venerable” Bede, Albert the Great, Anthony of Padua, Peter Canisius, Robert Bellarmine, and Lawrence of Brindisi).
There are three requirements that must be fulfilled by a person in order to merit being included in the ranks of the “Doctors of the Catholic Church”:
1) holiness that is truly outstanding, even among saints;
2) depth of doctrinal insight; and
3) an extensive body of writings which the church can recommend as an expression of the authentic and life-giving Catholic Tradition.

Saints - A Year in Faith and Art

Every Catholic saint, local and liturgical, is honoured on a particular day of the year. In many cases, an order of precedence has been worked out to determine which saints are most important. In "Saints", Rosa Giorgi has chosen up to three saints for every day of the year, along with representations of those saints ranging from world-famous works of art to more modern depictions. From a wide variety of sources, Giorgi has composed a short explanation of each saint to accompany the illustration, including etymology of names, historical background, occupations, cities and countries of patronage. Although many well-known saints are depicted, including Francis of Assisi, Joan of Arc and Thomas Aquinas, some relatively obscure saints are pictured as well.

About the Author

Rosa Giorgi is an art historian who specializes in iconography and iconology; in addition to writing, she teaches at the Catholic University and the Brera Picture Gallery in Milan. She is involved with many art organizations, including the Italian fine art commission. Her most recent publications include books on Caravaggio, Velasquez and El Greco. She is also the author of Saints in Art (2002) and Angels and Demons in Art (2003).
